We still lose ourselves to the restaurant’s radiant reds, deep dark wood and amber light search memories (such as the LP of musical duo Leon and Harry, Live at Rae & Jerry’s, which is advertised online for sale from Winnipeg Record & Tape Co) and imagine Mad Men’s Don Draper… just over there, draped over that corner banquette. Hrousalas’ stewardship and restraint have preserved a getaway not only of space but of time. Winnipeggers could never rename the restaurant “Steve’s” but that would be a fitting tribute. He has now owned Rae and Jerry’s longer than its founders and enumerates his three best decisions thus: “I bought it, left it alone and kept the staff.”
Steve Hrousalas purchased the restaurant in 1975 after approaching Rae and Hemsworth, who were then aged 61 and 63, respectively. This sense of escape was noted by architectural historian Kelly Crossman, who wrote, in Winnipeg Modern: “Buildings like Rae and Jerry’s Steak House…were up-to-date and stylish, offering Winnipeggers the kind of spaces seen in films like Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller North by Northwest, in magazines, or on vacations in New York or southern California.” She said: “(The owners) were really sophisticated and supported the idea of moving west down Portage Avenue and setting the building back from the street.
